Dailywiki
Privacy Policy
Dailywiki shows you short, random Wikipedia articles and can read them aloud. This Privacy Policy explains what happens to your information when you use the Dailywiki app for iOS and Android.
In short: Dailywiki does not collect, store or share any personal data. There is no account, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking. Everything the app remembers stays on your device.
1. Information we collect
We do not collect any personal data. The app has no registration or login, and we do not run any server that receives information from the app. We never see who you are, which articles you read, which articles you save or how you use the app.
2. Content from Wikipedia
The articles shown in the app are loaded directly from Wikipedia, which is operated by the Wikimedia Foundation. To do this, the app sends requests to Wikimedia servers:
- a random article summary is requested from Wikipedia in the language you choose (for example en.wikipedia.org)
- the list of available languages is requested from meta.wikimedia.org
- article images are loaded from Wikimedia servers
Like any website you visit, Wikimedia receives the technical information needed to answer these requests, such as your IP address, the requested language and a user agent that identifies the app and its version (for example “Dailywiki/1.1.0”). These requests contain no information that identifies you personally. Wikimedia processes this information according to the Wikimedia Foundation Privacy Policy.
When you choose to open an article on Wikipedia, it opens in your browser (or in the Wikipedia app, if installed), where their own privacy policies apply.
3. Data stored on your device
To work, the app keeps the following data only on your device, in a local database:
- the articles of your current reading session and the articles you save (title, summary, image link and Wikipedia link)
- your settings: article language, number of articles per session, voice, reading speed, text highlighting and daily reminder time
This data is never sent to us or to anyone else. You can remove saved articles in the app at any time, and all app data is deleted when you uninstall the app. If you use your device’s backup feature (such as iCloud or Google backup), this data may be included in those backups, which are managed by your device provider.
4. Listening to articles
When you listen to an article, it is read aloud by the text-to-speech engine built into your device. The app also reads the list of voices available on your device so that you can choose one. The app does not send the text or your voice choice to us. The text-to-speech engine is part of your device’s operating system and is governed by the terms of its provider (for example Apple or Google).
5. Notifications
If you turn on the daily reminder, the app asks for permission to send notifications. The reminder is scheduled locally on your device at the time you choose. We do not use push notification services, and no information is sent to a server. You can turn the reminder off at any time in the app settings or in your device settings.
6. Advertising, analytics and tracking
The app contains no advertising and no analytics, crash reporting or tracking tools. It does not use the advertising identifier of your device and does not track you across other apps or websites. We do not sell or share any data, because we do not collect any.
7. Children’s privacy
Dailywiki can be used by people of all ages. Since the app does not collect personal data from anyone, it does not collect personal data from children either.
8. Your rights
Under privacy laws such as the GDPR (European Union) and the CCPA (California) you have the right to access, correct or delete your personal data. Because we do not collect or store any personal data about you, there is no data we hold that could be accessed, corrected or deleted. The data the app keeps on your device is fully under your control, as described in section 3. If you have any questions about your rights, you can contact us.
9. Security
All communication between the app and Wikimedia servers is encrypted using HTTPS. The data stored on your device is protected by the security features of your device’s operating system.
10. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy, for example when new features are added to the app. Any changes will be published on this page together with the date of the last update.
11. This website
This website is hosted on GitLab Pages, a service of GitLab. When you visit it, GitLab’s servers receive the technical information needed to deliver the pages, such as your IP address and the type of browser you use, and may keep it in server logs for security and operation, as described in the GitLab Privacy Statement. The website doesn’t use cookies, analytics or tracking, and all its files, fonts included, are served by the website itself without contacting other services.
